q. is suntanning safe a. some people feel that it is not, but in the hands of a well qualified cosmeticist it is practically as safe as eating the best salad. sun tanning is really nothing more than a superficial application of laboratory prepared compounds that chemically penetrate the stratum corneum of the skin. it is a public service, which is also provided in this country by many kennel clubs, who deposit their suntanning powders on the premises. suntanning agents recommended for this purpose are alum and zinc oxide in several different forms. it is safer to use these in the powder form than in the paste form; and if more than is necessary is applied, the danger of irritation does not increase in proportion to the excess.
